Contractors Cargo Company was formed in 1933 and has been one of the pioneers of the modern-day, specialized transportation and heavy haul. The company now is recognized as a WBE (Women’s Business Enterprise) with the majority of the company being owned by women and meeting the requirements of the WBENC.
It has grown over the years and has expanded its scope of operations to be one of the truly fine companies that offers a full line of rigging and equipment installation services as well as being one of the premier specialized heavy and super-heavy engineered transportation companies in the United States.
Our transportation service includes the engineering of specialized transport equipment and the design and fabrication of any required special hauling equipment, air-ride cushion or payload support system. We also perform route surveys, obtain all necessary highway and road permits, supply all signs, barricades, night lighting, guard, escort services and utility clearances.
Contractors Cargo has transportation authority in all fifty states, Canada, and Mexico. CCC is active in performing complete door-to-door transportation including rail and/or sea port handling. If requested or needed, we will interface with the railroad companies on rail shipments, load, tie-down and unload rail cars on any acceptable rail siding or team track, no matter the location.
We take pride in the enviable reputation that we have earned for the careful transportation of some very expensive, cumbersome and delicate freight. Including the United States, NASA and many general contractors, manufacturers and freight forwarders.
History of Contractors Cargo Companies
In 1943, Jerry Wheeler enlisted in the United States Maritime Service and went to boot camp in Catalina, CA. He went to sea on various tanker ships until the end of World War II. On October 15, 1954, he started Wheeler Transportation Company with one truck. Here he operated as the driver, mechanic, dispatcher and more, hauling general cargo between the Los Angeles basin and northern California. Shortly after, he made his first major heavy haul contract with American Pipe & Construction Company (now Ameron International) to haul 1,700 loads of reinforcing steel cages for concrete pipe, 16’ in diameter for the Metropolitan Aqueduct. On January 15, 1962, Jerry purchased Contractors Cargo Company with ICC authority in the 6 western states.
|Between 1977 and 1986, Jerry helped coordinate and haul all 6 of the Space Shuttles 19 times, including barging the “Enterprise” up the Mississippi to the New Orleans world’s fair for Rockwell and NASA.
After being based in South Gate, CA for 35 years, Contractors Cargo moved to Compton, Ca where it has continued to design, engineer and manufacture hundreds of heavy specialized hauling systems. Aerospace, heavy construction, electrical power and petrol chemical have been and continue to be the major fields CCC specializes in.
